{"id":230,"date":"2010-09-26T04:09:42","date_gmt":"2010-09-26T08:09:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/recipes2.darcyparks.ca\/2010\/09\/26\/simplest-dal\/"},"modified":"2010-09-26T04:09:42","modified_gmt":"2010-09-26T08:09:42","slug":"simplest-dal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/recipes.darcyparks.ca\/?p=230","title":{"rendered":"Simplest Dal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Serves:<\/strong> 4<br \/>\n<strong>Source:<\/strong> How to Cook Everything Vegetarian<\/p>\n<h2>Ingredients:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>1 cup dried red lentils, washed and picked over<\/li>\n<li>2 tablespoons minced peeled fresh ginger<\/li>\n<li>1 tablespoon minced garlic<\/li>\n<li>4 cardamom pods<\/li>\n<li>1 tablespoon mustard seeds<\/li>\n<li>2 cloves<\/li>\n<li>1 teaspoon cracked black pepper<\/li>\n<li>1 ancho or other mild dried chile (optional)<\/li>\n<li>Salt<\/li>\n<li>2 tablespoons cold butter or peanut oil (optional)<\/li>\n<li>Chopped fresh cilantro leaves for garnish<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Instructions:<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Combine the lentils, ginger, garlic, cardamom, mustard seeds, cloves, pepper, and chile in a saucepan and add water to cover by about 1 inch. Cook at a steady simmer until the lentils are quite soft, 20 to 30 minutes, salting the lentils often.<\/li>\n<li>Remove the cloves and, if you like, the cardamom pods (they&#8217;re kind of fun to eat though). Stir in the butter or oil if you&#8217;re using it.
